Philip Rawlinson

About Philip:

Philip Rawlinson (they/them) is a violist, composer, and improviser whose work centers around new musical sound worlds, resilience, and liberation. Originally from Greenville, South Carolina, and now based in Boston at the New England Conservatory for undergraduate studies, they hope to create music that inspires and uplifts and brings meaning to their audiences. Philip entered the musical world in their middle school strings program, choosing the viola so that their triplet siblings could play violin and cello without too much competition, and so that they could play string trios together! After coming across more contemporary music in high school, they started composing music of their own, always being a direct path to collective creation and expression to share with their friends and family. A National YoungArts Competition winner in 2021, member of the 2020 and 2021 National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America, and soloist with the Carolina Youth Symphony in 2020, Philip has worked to reach a higher level of musical skill and understanding. But, they find the most meaningful experience and loving connection in collaboration and chamber music, and in experimentation and teaching and constant learning. Outside of their musical work, Philip loves reading and gaining new knowledge, having coffee or tea or food with friends, and taking long walks listening to music or the sounds of the world around them.
